The French Dip Sandwich is one of those comforting meals that never goes out of style. Tender slices of roast beef tucked into a crusty baguette or hoagie roll, paired with melted cheese, and dipped into a rich, savory au jus—it’s pure sandwich perfection. Whether for a cozy weeknight dinner or a game-day crowd-pleaser, this recipe delivers big flavor with simple ingredients.
Ingredients:
For the Sandwiches:
2 lbs thinly sliced roast beef (deli-style or leftover roast)
4–6 crusty hoagie rolls or French baguette sections
8 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
2 tbsp butter, softened
1 tsp garlic powder
For the Au Jus (dipping sauce):
3 cups beef broth (low-sodium)
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp soy sauce (optional, for extra depth)
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp black pepper
1 sprig fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried) 1 bay leaf
Instructions:
Step 1: Make the Au Jus
In a medium saucepan, combine beef broth, Worcestershire, soy sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, thyme, and bay leaf.
Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
Let it cook for 10–15 minutes to develop flavor, then remove the thyme and bay leaf.
Keep warm.
Step 2: Prep the Rolls
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice the rolls in half and spread each with a thin layer of butter.
Sprinkle with garlic powder.
Toast in the oven for 5 minutes, until lightly golden.
Step 3: Heat the Beef
Add the sliced roast beef directly into the warm au jus for 1–2 minutes, just to heat through. (Don’t overcook, or the beef will toughen.)
Step 4: Assemble
Layer the warmed beef onto the toasted rolls.
Top with provolone or Swiss cheese.
Place the sandwiches back in the oven for 3–4 minutes, until the cheese melts.
Step 5: Serve
Pour the hot au jus into small bowls or ramekins.
Serve each sandwich with its own dipping bowl—because dunking is the star of the show!
Tips & Variations
Cheese options: Try Gruyère or mozzarella for a different flavor.
Add onions: Caramelized onions take this sandwich to another level.
Spicy kick: Add a smear of horseradish sauce before topping with beef.
Shortcut: Use store-bought beef broth, but add a splash of red wine for extra richness.
Perfect Pairings
French fries, sweet potato fries, or even a crisp coleslaw pair beautifully. For drinks, an iced tea, a cold beer, or even a bold red wine makes a fantastic match.
